Ever since I was a kid I’ve been into bird watching , photography, and Pokemon. And as no surprise, Pokemon Snap was one of my favorite games as a kid. A few go by and I start seeing videos on Youtube and posts on Reddit
where Fans wanted a new next Generation Pokemon Snap game. It didn’t seem like Pokemon or Nintendo were going to work on or create a new installment of Pokemon Snap (at the time 2018), so I decided to try to “Remake” Pokemon
Snap, as my first game development project ever.
Through working on this project I learned how to code, figured out some good workflows, and stressed my 3d generalist skills. I work as a Cinematographer and Camera
man from time to time, so creating the camera system in the game was one of the parts that took the longest to get right.
Since I had limited knowledge of game development, Snaps had all the problems of an unfocused
game. Feature creep and bad coding were the main reasons the project took as long as it did. Learning how to create In Editor tools in Unity to help with the importing, placement, and automation of various game development
commands really kept me sane during development. With over 200 Pokemon in the game split between 4 levels, a lot of optimization and revisions constantly took place.
The best part of the project was being able to place
what I call Attraction Pokemon around the map. It’s like creating animatronic attractions you’d see in a theme park.
I love Pokemon, and I know this is probably killing my chances, but I would still love to work on an
official Pokemon project in the future.
With Snaps, I just want everyone to enjoy the world of Pokemon in a new way, and hopefully learn some photography. And I can’t wait for the New Pokemon Snap game for the Nintendo
Switch.
Thank you.
